To put it in football terms, Anthony Davis began life deep in his own end zone. But through grit, determination and a steadfast refusal to be denied, he picked up the ball and took it to the house.
Facing Challenges
From the beginning, AD took on life’s obstacles as he would later take on opposing linebackers — fearlessly. Yet those obstacles were daunting: Growing up in a blighted San Fernando Valley community. Enduring the angry abuse of his alcoholic father. Debilitating bouts of asthma. Confronting the racism of the day. Competing athletically despite his relatively small stature. And a serious car crash that damaged his legs.

Yet his passion for athletics combined with his extraordinary work ethic, a gift handed down from his tireless mother, to take him from a lowly regarded third-string running back to the catalyst of “The Comeback,” USC’s legendary come-from-way-behind annihilation of bitter rival Notre Dame: In the process winning two national championships in football and three in baseball; motivating then-upstart Nike to design a shoe just for him; and earning induction into the College Football Hall of Fame before embarking on noteworthy careers in professional football and real estate.
